Frequently Asked Questions About SC-1 Membrane Storage Solution

If I have a Spectra watermaker, can I use something other than SC-1 to pickle or store my membrane?

Yes. Our preferred long-term storage solution is PG-50 (50% Propylene Glycol). When used correctly, PG-50 can preserve your watermaker for up to two years, which is approximately four times longer than traditional powdered storage solutions. It also helps protect other internal components of the watermaker, not just the reverse osmosis membrane.

If PG-50 is available, it is generally the best option for extended storage.

I’ve used sodium metabisulfite (SMB) to pickle membranes in my other watermakers. Why can’t I use it in a Spectra watermaker?

The difference is the type of high-pressure pump used by the system.

Many watermakers, including Sea Water Pro, Rainman, and Village Marine models, use traditional plunger pumps and are designed to be preserved with sodium metabisulfite (SMB).

Spectra watermakers use an Energy Recovery Device (ERD) instead of a conventional plunger pump. Sodium metabisulfite can damage the internal components of an ERD pump, which is why Spectra recommends SC-1 if you’re using a powdered membrane storage solution.

Using the correct preservation solution helps protect your watermaker and can prevent costly repairs.

Can I use SC-1 on watermakers other than Spectra?

Yes. SC-1 can be used on other reverse osmosis watermakers. However, always confirm that it is compatible with your specific manufacturer’s recommendations before use. Following the watermaker manufacturer’s storage guidelines is the best way to protect your membrane and other system components.

Is SC-1 a good spare item to keep onboard?

Yes. SC-1 is an excellent spare to keep on your boat, especially if you cruise long distances or may need to leave your vessel unattended unexpectedly.

While PG-50 is our preferred preservation method for long-term storage, having SC-1 onboard provides a convenient backup if PG-50 isn’t available when you need to pickle your watermaker.

How many SC-1 packets do I need for my Spectra watermaker?

For most Spectra watermakers, one SC-1 packet is all that’s required to preserve the system.

The exceptions are the Newport 1000 and Farallon models, which require two SC-1 packets because of their larger membrane capacity.

If you’re unsure which Spectra model you have, check your owner’s manual or contact us before ordering to ensure you purchase the correct quantity.
