To help manage operating temperatures, Spectra equips these feed pumps with a removable aluminum heat sink and cooling fan. As long as the fan is operating properly and the motor continues performing normally, a hot motor housing is generally considered normal.

Is replacing the Shurflo motor and pump head difficult?
No. Replacing the feed pump assembly is generally considered a straightforward repair for most boat owners.
If it’s your first replacement, expect the job to take approximately one hour, depending on how easily the pump can be accessed.
Once you’ve completed the procedure once, future replacements are often much quicker. An experienced technician can typically replace the feed pump assembly in approximately 20 minutes, although installation time always depends on the accessibility of the watermaker.
Which Spectra Watermaker models use the Shurflo motor and pump head?

Can I add another Shurflo feed pump to increase my Spectra Watermaker’s water production?
In some cases, yes—but only on specific Spectra Watermaker models.
The Spectra Ventura 200T can be upgraded with a second Shurflo feed pump to increase freshwater production. However, this upgrade requires more than simply adding another pump.
A proper conversion also requires:
- A second 21-inch reverse osmosis membrane and pressure vessel, or
- A single 40-inch membrane and pressure vessel
- Additional plumbing fittings and tubing
- System modifications to accommodate the increased flow
Most importantly, this upgrade requires a 10% Clark Pump.
The standard Ventura 200T is compatible because it uses the 10% Clark Pump.
The Ventura 150, however, uses a 7% Clark Pump, which is not compatible with a dual-feed-pump configuration.
The good news is that many 7% Clark Pumps can be converted into a 10% Clark Pump by replacing the bottom center block with a 10% block. Once that conversion is completed, the system can often be upgraded to support the additional feed pump and larger membrane configuration.
