What does the roto flow meter do on a Spectra Watermaker?

The Spectra roto flow meter, also known as the product water flow meter, measures the amount of fresh water your Spectra Watermaker produces.

It is installed on fully automatic Spectra Watermaker systems and is not used on manual models.

Inside the clear flow meter housing is a small Pelton-style wheel. As product water flows through the meter, the wheel spins. The speed of this wheel is monitored electronically and sent to the Spectra control board, which calculates your system’s water production in gallons per hour (GPH).

The control panel then uses this information to display production rates and verify that the watermaker is operating correctly.


Which Spectra Watermaker models use a roto flow meter?

The roto flow meter is found on fully automatic Spectra Watermaker systems that use an electronic control board to monitor system performance.

Manual Spectra Watermakers do not use a roto flow meter because they do not rely on electronic production monitoring or automatic shutdown features.

Why is the Spectra roto flow meter important?

The roto flow meter is one of the primary sensors used by the Spectra control board to confirm that your watermaker is producing fresh water.

When the flow meter detects product water moving through the system, it continuously sends production information to the controller.

If the control board stops receiving this signal, it assumes the watermaker has stopped producing water and begins its fault protection sequence.

Without a functioning roto flow meter, a fully automatic Spectra Watermaker may shut itself down even though every other component is operating normally.


What happens if the Spectra roto flow meter fails?

A failed roto flow meter commonly causes the watermaker to display a “System Stalled” alarm.

This alarm often leads owners to believe the Clark Pump has stopped shifting. However, in reality, the Clark Pump is frequently operating normally.

In approximately 95% of these cases, the actual problem is a failed or stuck roto flow meter rather than a defective Clark Pump.

Before displaying the System Stalled alarm, the Spectra controller typically attempts to restart the system three separate times. If no product water signal is detected after these restart attempts, the controller shuts the system down to protect the watermaker.

For this reason, the roto flow meter should always be inspected before assuming the Clark Pump requires repair.


Can a bad roto flow meter cause a false System Stalled alarm?

Yes.

A defective Spectra roto flow meter is one of the most common causes of a false System Stalled alarm.

Because the controller relies on the flow meter to confirm water production, it cannot distinguish between a failed sensor and a watermaker that has actually stopped producing water.

As a result, the controller may report that the Clark Pump is not shifting when the pump is functioning perfectly and the system is still producing fresh water.

If your Spectra Watermaker displays a System Stalled alarm while water production appears normal, the roto flow meter should be one of the first components you inspect.


How do I know if my Spectra roto flow meter is bad?

There are two common ways a Spectra roto flow meter can fail.

The first is mechanical failure, where the internal Pelton wheel becomes stuck and no longer spins freely.

The second is electrical failure, where the electronic sensor no longer sends a signal to the control board even though the wheel continues to rotate.

Common symptoms include:

  • System Stalled alarms

By disabling the flow meter (and related automatic monitoring functions, depending on your control board configuration), the watermaker can continue producing fresh water. However, automatic production monitoring and certain control screen functions will no longer operate as designed.

Can the Spectra roto flow meter be installed backwards?

No.

The Spectra roto flow meter is directional and must be installed correctly to operate properly.

A molded flow direction arrow is located on the clear housing of the flow meter.

During installation, this arrow should always point toward the product water manifold.

Installing the flow meter backwards can prevent accurate flow measurement and may cause incorrect production readings or fault alarms.


What causes a Spectra roto flow meter to fail?

Like most marine components, a roto flow meter can wear out over time.
